Pizza - Made Indian Style

Pizza is an Italian savory dish which has gained popularity throughout the world. A flattened wheat based dough topped with tomato sauce and various toppings. One new thing i learnt while writing this blog is that a small Pizza is also called - Pizzetta.

We'll be making an Indian version of this so famous Italian dish because that's how we like it. You can make a few huge pizzas or make a lot of Pizzettas- the choice is yours. So, as we get cooking ,you need to prep for three elements of this yum savory dish - Base, Sauce, Toppings.

Let's begin.

Home-made Pizza sauce is super delicious. It can be made and stored frozen almost a month, to satiate your midnight pizza cravings.

For the Dough you'll need-

  • 1 1/2 Cup Whole-wheat flour

  • 1/2 Tsp Baking Soda + Baking Powder

  • 3 Tbsp Curd

  • 1 Tbsp Refined Oil

  • Salt To taste and Water

Instructions -

  • Take a bowl and add flour,Baking soda, baking powder, Salt and Curd. Mix everything to make a sand type texture.

  • Add oil and around 3/4 cup water and knead it well. The dough should be sticky/runny. So sticky that it sticks to your hands on touching.

  • Cover with a damp cloth and let sit for 30 minutes.

For The Sauce you'll need -

  • 4 Tomatoes Blended/pureed

  • 1 Onion Blended

  • 2 Cloves Garlic + 1/2 Inch Ginger

  • 1 Tbsp Refined Oil and 1 Tbsp Ketchup

  • 1 tsp- red Chilli Powder, Turmeric Powder, Oregano

  • Salt to taste

Instructions -

  • In a pan heat oil and add the Blended Onion/pureed onion , ginger and garlic and saute them till they turn brown. Now add the tomatoes and cook the mix until the tomatoes change color and the water evaporates.

  • Once the mixture turns thick add in the oregano, turmeric and chilli powder and cook for another minute. Now add the salt, ketchup and 2 tbsp water and bring the mix to a boil.

  • Let the sauce cool completely then. blend again in a mixer and sieve. Sauce is ready to be used for pizzas or Pasta.

Now, to make the base, let's divide the dough into 4 equal parts. With the help of some dry flour roll out the dough in a round shape to about 5 mm thick chapatis. Poke the flattened chapati with a fork to avoid fluffing up.

Cook these on low flame both ways on a tawa until you see small brown specks both the sides. You can make all the base and use them when required to make pizza.

Flood your pizza with toppings of your choice. Ours had onion, capsicum, corn and cheese.

Almost final step- Assembling the Pizza.

You've done all the labour and here comes the fun part. Take a base and spread a spoonful of the flavourful topping evenly. Sprinkle a generous amount of cheese. Now, add the toppings of your choice olives, chopped mushrooms, tomatoes, bell-peppers, paneer. I added onions, boiled corn, capsicum as these were available in the kitchen. Now, bake this in a pre-heated oven @ 180 for about 15 minutes or the cheese is melted. Or alternatively, you can heat up a nonstick pan and cover and cook on medium heat for 5-8 minutes or till the cheese is melted. Slice and serve hot.
